APT (아파트):
APT or Apateu (아파트) is the Korean term for "apartment." It refers to residential buildings or complexes that consist of multiple housing units. Apartments are a common form of housing in South Korea, especially in urban areas like Seoul. They range from small, single-room units to large, multi-room family homes.
So why did this Korean term become so popular globally? It's due to a Korean drinking game called APT 아파트 (Apartment Game) and the fact that Rosé and Bruno Mars released an addictive song about it. In the famous game, APT or Apateu, a person shouts "APT 아파트" and a specific number. Participants stack their hands, and the participant whose hand lands on that number counting from the bottom drinks alcohol as a penalty shot. Typically, the shouted numbers should be more than twice the number of participants, since there are two hands per person. After the hands are stacked, participants then continue stacking their hands from the bottom to the top until someone hits that bust number. This game has been popular in Korea for a long time, but Rosé and Bruno Mars amplified the interest with their song released in 2024.
Birdy Korea Travel Tip: To best enjoy the APT 아파트 game, the number shouted should not be too low nor too high, to build suspense but not take too long. It's a really enjoyable game that can be played with any number of participants.
